(Department of Physical Education,Shenzhen Polytechnic,Shenzhen 518055,China) Abstract: The authors probed into the characteristics of development of world men’s basketball based on the statis-tical data of men’s basketball in the 28th Olympic Games and World Championship 2006 coupled with the data of other world basketball games, and revealed the following findings: In terms of offense in world men’s basketball, more attention was paid to the quality and efficiency of offense, offense area was expanded, offense was organized holistically, and the primary way of offense was the one in which offense was launched mainly inside the three-point line and offense inside and outside the three-point line was well balanced; in terms of defense, more attention was paid to the quality of defense, defense area was expanded, defense lineup was flexible, action specific and random, and the evaluation of defense efficiency was emphasized; in terms of defense lineup, comprehensive defense was adopted mainly; offense pace was speeded up, and the balance between offense and defense was emphasized; the difference in basketball game performance between various countries worldwide was being reduced, which forms a situation in which the European teams were counterbalancing with the American teams; international basketball players had promoted the uplift of the technical level of basketball in various countries.
