| （School of Physical Education，Jiangxi Normal University，Nanchang 330027，China） Abstract: In the history of ancient Greek ideology, the appearance of city-state was an event with a decisive sig-nificance. It was city-state that gave me life, and that gave sports development a chance to become a social move-ment. Without the nourishing of city-state, sport would still parasitize human social behaviors such as labor, hunting, sacrifice, military affairs and entertainment. It was city-state that made sport independent, become one of the three backbones of education in ancient Greece. From the perspective of city-state sport, the author explored its functions on sports development, and analyzed that city-state sport contains such characteristic as happiness realization, free thought, justice demand, hero idol and brave quality.
