(Department of Physical Education,Nanyang Institute of Technology,Nanyang 473004,China) Abstract: In the United States some public universities set up compulsory physical education courses according to the relevant educational regulations, while other public universities and all private universities decide whether or not to set up compulsory physical education courses according to their own needs, but all universities in China have set up compulsory physical education courses in a highly unified way; in the United States, some physical education courses are opened for people who are closely related to the universities, while they are opened for current college students, but in China physical education courses are opened for current college students only; in universities in the United States, some physical education courses have no credits, but in universities in China all physical education courses have corresponding credits; in most universities in the United State, physical education courses are charged for teaching service fees, but in China teaching service is completely free; universities in the United States do not compulsively require students to take compulsory physical education courses in which fixed terms, but in China the study terms of compulsory physical education courses are strictly specified; in universities in the United States, the teaching contents of physical education courses are mainly fitness contents, but in China sports skills are the main teaching contents. Relevant inspirations are as follows: we should allow some common institutes of higher learning to decide by themselves whether or not to set up compulsory physical education courses; we should expand the scope of service subjects of physical education courses; we should increase the proportion of the teaching contents of fitness courses, and the percentage of externally hired physical education teachers; we should allow our universi-ties to charge for some physical education courses.
