| （Department of Physical Education，Hengyang Normal Institute，Hengyang 421008，China） Abstract: Civilization is the highest form or a higher form of culture, while the essence of sport is culture, but not necessarily civilization. The third historical view considers that nomadic nations created sports culture, while agri-cultural nations depreciated sports culture. Sport originated from the barbarism of nomadic nations, and declined in the civilization of agricultural nations. The Olympic spirit occurs in Europe, because Europe is the tradition of no-madic culture, whereas ancient China had observed the tradition of agricultural culture over a long period of time. The opposition between sports origin and sports civilization has decided the existence of estrangement between sport and civilization. The birth of cities enables nomadic nations and agricultural nations to have a similar manner of existence, and at the same time gives birth to similar needs at a higher level. The estrangement between sport and civilization can be made up only in urban civilization.
