There are various views on period di-vision in existing works on the sports history of new China, in which issues worthy of discussion are criteria and units for period division. Based on analyzing and discussing these issues, the authors probed into a new way for pe-riod division, and ultimately put forward the following specific ideas for period division: by basing the division line on National Sports Convention held in February 1979, the sports history of new China is divided into two succes-sive 30-year periods; the first 30 years are divided into 5 stages, in which the 4 division points are November 1952, when Central Sports Committee was established, June 1956, when National Rural Sports Working Conference was held, December 1966, when RONG Gao-tang, a deputy director of National Sports Committee, was overthrown, and October 1976, when “The Gang of Four” was smashed; the second 30 years are divided into 3 stages, in which the 2 division points are October 1984, when the Twelfth Central Committee Conference was held, and March 1992, when the “Hongshankou Meeting” was convened.
