(School of Physical Education,Luoyang Teachers’ Institute,Luoyang 471022,China) Abstract: The author collected and analyzed statistics of the additional setting up of the regular physical education major in institutes of higher learning in China, which had been registered at or approved by the Ministry of Educa-tion between 2004 and 2007: the setting up of the physical education major in many comprehensive institutes and other specialized institutes not only wasted social resources, but also caused unfavorable competition between the cultivation of regular college students and the cultivation of graduate students pursuing for a master degree; insti-tutes that additionally set up the social sport major had such problems as unrighteous motives, unclear goals, the lack of teachers, and blurry cultivation modes; the setting up of the sports training major, science of moving human bodies major, and traditional national sport major, is comparatively rational; except that the sports fitness and health major was set up in two institutes not specializing in physical education, all the other additionally set up majors were set up in institutes specializing in physical education, which is rational to a certain extent.
