| （School of Physical Education，Shanghai Normal University，Shanghai 200438，China） Abstract: By examining the events and methods used in the National Physical Education Majoring College Student Basic Skill Competition held for all these years, the authors discussed such issues as the concept of basic skill com-petition, competition holding purpose and events, as well as the major construction and development of competition participating institutions, put forward the following opinions: enhancing the quality of teaching for all students is the fundamental purpose for the holding of the basic skill competition; the basic skill competition plays a role in guiding the orientation of major cultivation; the competition events should embody the basic skills needed by physical edu-cation majoring students in their future careers, and hence proposed that the competition events and methods should be adjusted and improved, so that the competition will match up to its name better.
