(1.School of Physical Education,Chongqing University,Chongqing 400030,China;2.School of Physical Education,China West Normal University,Nanchong 637009,China) Abstract: By means of qualitative study, the authors had an in-depth interview with 7 physical education teachers in elementary and middle schools in Chongqing, formed a “theory of rooting”, and shorted out 5 working conditions of physical education teachers, namely, strong motive – high capacity – good performance, strong motive – low capac-ity – poor performance, weak motive – low capacity – poor performance, weak motive – high capacity – poor per-formance, and weak motive – high capacity – poor performance. Based on these working conditions, the authors discussed such issues as how to deal with the individual needs, individual capacities and work performances of physical education teachers, and put forward the following opinions: stimulating the work motive of physical educa-tion teachers by meeting their individual needs and optimizing their working environments is the most fundamental and effective way to enhance their work performances.
