(1.Department of Physical Education,Tianjin University of Science and Technology,Tianjin 300222,China;2.Department of Physical Education,Tsinghua University,Beijing 100084,China) Abstract: The authors examined 3 representative sports forms in different periods in the history of development of western competitive sports, namely, the combat game in ancient Greece, the cavalier competition in the Middle Ages and the football game in modern times, analyzed physical violence expressed by these 3 types of competitive sports, then probed into the characteristics of evolution of physical violence in western competitive sports, and revealed the following findings: physical violence in western competitive sports was developed from physical violence presented by war worshiping to physical violence symbolized by drama, from individual physical violence to collective physical violence, from dominant physical violence to recessive physical violence; the evolution of physical vio-lence in western competitive sports embodied the course of development of the civilization of competitive sports, and was accompanied by the escalation and generalization of physical violence; the establishment of competition rules embodied the control of the course of development of western competitive sports over physical violence.
