| （1.School of Physical Education and Training，Shanghai University of Sport，Shanghai 200438，China；2.School of Physical Education，Shanghai Normal University，Shanghai 200234，China） Abstract: The rising of competitive sports of a nation is closely connected to the national social mentality and po-litical needs of the nation. Based on the process of rising of competitive sports in Japan, the authors divided the process roughly into 3 periods. In such 3 periods, Japanese national social mentality and political needs had distinc-tive characteristics. Lastly, based on the characteristics of Japanese national social mentality and political needs, the author derived the following 3 inspirations: for the development of competitive sports in China, we should consider national social mentality and political needs in different periods; the thoughts of different groups of people about competitive sports are separated and diversified; we must create a “Chinese mode”.
