(School of Sports News and Communication and Foreign Language,Shanghai Sports University,Shanghai 200438,China) Abstract: After Radio Gymnastics was launched on December 1, 1951, it immediately became an iconic way of na-tional fit-keeping, an event of body movement and a collective life style in new China. Since the new century, quite a number of organizations and companies in China have resumed doing Radio Gymnastics to different extents, while the positive, perceptual and constructive ritual elements of movement containing in Radio Gymnastics have caught the attention of scholars in disciplines such as science of physical education, science of social performance, dramaturgy and anthropology. Radio Gymnastics has become a bodily symbol of collectivism, an icon of movement in a thought homogenized era, a form of musical dancing of Confucianistic ritual culture in China. The symbolic significance of it as a ritual symbol of movement is much greater than the value of it as a fit-keeping sports event.
