(1.Department of Physical Education,School of Education,SUN YAT-SEN University,Guangzhou 510275,China;2.Department of Physical Education,Nanjing University of Science and Technology,Nanjing 210094,China) Abstract: By examining the ratio of students to teachers in physical education in elementary and middle schools in China, the authors revealed the following findings: the education department had not established standards for the ratio of students to teachers in school physical education; the lack of physical education teachers reflected that there was an intrinsic contradiction between the structure and pattern in the ratio of students to teachers, while the super heavy workload of physical education teachers reflected the restriction of efficiency on quality in the ratio of stu-dents to teachers. The authors put forward the following suggestions: strengthen the study of the ratio of students to teachers in physical education, and establish different types of standards for the ratio of students to teachers in school physical education; investigate the ratio of students to teachers physical education in elementary and middle schools nationwide; study physical education teacher configuration standards and posts, and understand the causes for the lacking of physical education teachers; increase the index of the ratio of students to teachers in physical edu-cation in the statistics of the education development bulletin; boost the improvement of school physical education working performance, starting with increasing physical education teachers.
