The authors drew the following conclusions: in the 40 years of reform and opening, the role changing of sports as-sociations in China went through the rule changing from “the managed” to “the partner” and to “the freeman”, the process of changing was China’s political transformation in miniature, also the embodiment of China’s democratic progress and social prosperity; in the process of role changing, sports associations had problems such as the unclear role in participating in social governance, the missing of role distance and stage, etc; for fully exerting sports asso-ciations’ role in participating in social governance, the government should build a “stage” for sports associations to play their role, society should strive to build a long-term effective system to support sports associations participating in social governance, sports associations themselves should strengthen role learning, enhance role playing aware-ness, and improve social governance ability.
