(Department of Physical Education,Tsinghua University,Beijing 100084,China) Abstract: The competitive sports reserve talents cultivation has long been a concern of the sport academia in China due to its close relation with the overall strength and sustainable development of competitive sports, which is vital to build a leading sport nation. The proposal of dual career with Chinese characteristics in the new era offers a chance for the competitive sports reserve talents cultivation in China to solve dilemma and to promote high-quality devel-opment. By analyzing China and the leading sport nations’ appeals for it, this article points out four dilemmas of dual career and the competitive sports reserve talents cultivation in China: the lack of solid academic basis and un-clear policy guidance; scarce successful experience in the combination of physical education and cultural education to draw lessons; lack of resource allocation and restriction of enrollment scale; the contradiction between learning and training is difficult to be alleviated, and the flow of talents is more rational. Based on these, this article puts forward three suggestions on dual career for competitive sports reserve talents cultivation with Chinese characteris-tics: to form fundamental theories, to strengthen the top-level design and to form the short-term and long-term paths of the elite athlete cultivation for those mentioned above in the new era.
