The study uses expert interviews, fieldwork, and case studies to investigate the reuse of idle industrial space for urban renewal. It is found that the reuse of idle industrial space for sports can improve land use efficiency, drive the development of related industries, optimize the spatial layout of cities, improve the environment of regeneration areas, inherit the memory of industrial culture, and promote the construction of "15 minute living circle". The sports reuse mode of idle industrial space in various places can be divided into three categories: community recreation type, life for all, and industrial upgrading type. At present, the following obstacles exist in the reuse of idle industrial space for urban renewal in China: improper project planning, multiple risks of transformation, social forces exploring on their own, insufficient participation of surrounding residents, lack of ecological environment transformation, and insufficient protection of key buildings. Accordingly, the following suggestions are put forward: compiling special plans for renovation, establishing a system of joint departmental meetings, introducing relevant regulations and policies, and gradually strengthening top-level design; establishing public-private partnerships, strengthening public participation, and optimizing the project renovation mechanism; renovating projects both inside and outside, raising awareness of cultural values, and promoting urban ecological and cultural renewal.
