(Department of Physical Education,Hohai University,Nanjing 210098,China) Abstract: In modern time health is defined as “a state of complete physical,mental,and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”This description of health is not a contemporary invention when examining the history of China.During the period of chunqiuzhanguo about 2400 years ago,self-cultivation and regulation were recognized as the foundation of health,and human beings were perceived as a complementary and inseparable integrity with their surrounding world and universe.Such micro-and macrocosm is deeply rooted in ancient chinese holistic health preservation philosophy and thought.Daoism or taoism is the core of ancient Chinese philosophy.Restrain oneself and nurturing the virtue are crucial in ancient health-cultivation and regulation.Together with the nature-human-integrity doctrine,they lay the foundation and principles for achieving the healthy body,mind and society.
