(Institute for Sports History,Chengdu Sport University,Chengdu 610041,China) Abstract: From the perspective of history and sociology, the author analyzed the sport culture of Europe in middle ages, and revealed the following finding: such factors as the declination of the ancient Roman empire, the spreading of Christianity, and the invasion of Teutons, had resulted in that sports activities in middle ages went down into a declining period, with the fusion of Christian civilization with Teutonic civilization, the booming of countries, cities and trades in modern Europe, and the growth of military and entertainment needs, the sport culture in middle ages that based cavalier sports as its leading sports and citizens, peasants and clergymen as its important constituent parts was formed. The author concluded that the sports culture in middle ages was not completely in “dark ages” gov-erned by fatuous clergymen, but was in ages emitting special brilliance and vitality.
