| （1.Sports Center，Tianjin Polytechnic University，Tianjin 300160，China；2.Department of Physical Education，Dalian University of Technology，Dalian 116024，China） Abstract: By selecting physical education in a narrow sense as the key to make a breakthrough, the author analyzed problems existing in the study of the nature and definition of physical education in China today. The ideological evolution from “education on the body” to “education via the body” in the United States indicates that the nature of physical education is still education. “Athletic education” is just a mode of sports education. Physical education in the United State is bodily education; its connotation is education on people via the body. The authors considered that distinguishing physical education from competition by referring to the achievements made in Britain and the United States in the study of physical education is a shortcut to the settlement of the confusion of the concept of physical education in China.
