(School of Physical Education and Sports Science,South China Normal University,Guangzhou 510006,China) Abstract: In the context of socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era, the realization of dream for the leading sporting nation has already put forward unprecedented requirements for the professional development of high-quality physical education teachers. This study deeply discuss into the current situation, present challenges and future directions of professional development for physical education teachers, and also revealing that the deepening of the concept on physical education, and the strengthening of the sense of responsibility and mission for physical education teachers, would be the keys to adapt to the requirements in the new era. The study also find that the imperfection of the teacher training system, the limited opportunities for professional growth, and the singularity of the educational evaluation system, are the main problems in facing the current professional development for physical education teachers. In response to these problems, this paper proposes several constructive strategies to resolve them, such as building a diversified teacher training system, providing abundant professional growth opportunities, and promoting the innovation of the educational evaluation mechanism, which try to comprehensively improve the professional literacy and teaching ability for physical education teachers, and contribute to improving the quality of physical education teaching and promoting the construction of a leading sporting nation.
